Sejarah Kedatangan Masyarakat India dan Penglibatan Awal dalam Sosio-Ekonomi di Negara Brunei Darussalam
Abstract

ABSTRACT: “History of Indian Arrival and Early Involvement in Socio-Economics in Brunei Darussalam”. This paper examines the Indian business success in Brunei Darussalam based on historical perspective. Indian traders have increasingly gaining attention, especially by the year 2000, with their ability to expand business segments, including their textile business monopoly. The long history of migration has positioned their socio-economic activity, which started as laborer and shop assistants for Chinese or Malay business people to successfull business owners. Their success also can be measured through ability to acquire several business segments, such as retail, tailor-made shops, and barners, fromerly dominated by Chinese traders. Through historical method, qualitative approach, library research, and interviews, this study has revealed the socio-economic history and business journey of the Indian community in Brunei. Their positive attitude to learn the intricacies of the busines, their persistence, and strong community values have enable them to start their own business, thus succeeding in becoming a well respected business community. It is hoped that the findings from this study can be utilized by the government, Malay business community, researchers, and other stakeholders in the socio-economics field in Brunei Darussalam.
